| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit deals with the historical evolution of Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture. It will consider both the theoretical foundations of the Renaissance movement with particular reference to the writings of Alberti, Serlio, Palladio, Vignola and also their built works. The lectures will trace the rich regional variations of the Renaissance through the works of its leading protagonists starting from Brunelleschi, Bramante and Michelangelo. It will consider the onset of Mannerist architecture and the transition to the Baroque movement in the aftermath of the Counter-Reformation. Roman Baroque architecture will be highlighted principally through the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini and Pietro da Cortona. Attention will also be devoted to the regional variations of the Baroque in Piedmont, Naples and Sicily. Knowledge & Understanding: • The study-unit is designed to provide a broad overview of Renaissance and Baroque architecture in Italy; • At the end of the study unit the student will be in a position to appreciate the impact of this period in subsequent developments in architectural history. Skills: • By the end of the study-unit the student will be in a position to better appreciate the importance of Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture; • At the end of the study-unit the student will be sufficiently well-equipped to understand and contextualise Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
