| DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to help trainee PSD teachers reflect on school practices observed and to link-up with the theory covered in other study-units, as well as the PSD syllabus. A second objective of this study-unit is to prepare trainee PSD teachers for the profession by addressing issues in the PSD Syllabus within the new national curriculum framework. To achieve this aim, trainee PSD teachers shall be exposed to a series of themes from persons in the field. The idea is for trainee PSD teachers to be aware of related professionals and professional services. Themes include: career education, child abuse, democracy education, ethical and professional issues, health promotion and PSD, media education, disability issues, drug education, sexualtiy and relationships education. Study-unit Outline: 1. The PSD Syllabus and projects in PSD • The PSD Syllabus and curriculum • PSD in the primary and Secondary School • Analysing the implemeneation of the syllabus through modeling session • Rationalzing PSD Projects - making PSD more visible in schools • Planning PSD Projects – experiential session • PSD and a whole school approach 2. Observation and Modelling Sessions • To understand what learning through observations and modelling is and the theory behind it • To identify what aspects to look for during observation sessions • To identify what makes a model PSD Specialist • To understand what immediacy is • To identify situations calling for immediacy 3. Democracy and Media Education • Definition of Citizenship • Citizenship Education • Citizenship in the PSD Syllabus • Applications for the Classroom • Definitions of Media Education & Media Literacy • Media Representations & Structures • Research in Media Education • Media Education Concepts • Media Education and PSD 4. Career Education • Presenting the concept of a career • External and internal factors that affect choice of career • Understand what themes and topics are related to career education in PSD 5. Drug Education • Elements that make up drug education • How best to deliver drug education within a PSD context • Help students develop skills to deal with difficult questions, comment and issues • Awareness of the substance abuse policy • How and when to make use of the substance abuse policy 6. Sexuality and Relationships Education in the Classroom • The Sexual Health Policy and PSD • Creating a safe environment to discuss sex and sexuality • Training and gaining self confidence in delivering a programme • Factors to be taken into consideration in planning a sexuality education programme • Formation versus information • Involving all stakeholders • The objectives of a sexuality education programme • The involvement of other teachers in a sexuality education programme • Fears and apprehensions in delivering the programme 7.
