DESCRIPTION This unit builds on the previous one and addresses all 4 linguistic skills: reading comprehension, oral comprehension, speaking and writing. Themes tackled include daily activities, lodging, travelling, city life, physical descriptions etc.

Unit Aims:

- To improve students' speaking skills by training them in a range of communicative scenarios through speech acts.
- To improve students' listening skills by exposing them to level-appropriate dialogues.
- To improve students' writing skills by training them in grammar, vocabulary and written layout for basic correspondence.
- To improve students' reading skills by exposing them to a range of level-appropriate texts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
- Use a greater variety of verbs and tenses in a communicative context;
- Tell the time in French and use expressions of time;
- Use vocabulary related to daily activities, leisure, city life;
- Give directions and use prepositions of place;
- Answer a phone conversation in French.

2. Skills:

By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
- Follow speech which is carefully articulated, with pauses for him/her to assimilate meaning;
- Understand instructions addressed carefully and slowly to him/her and follow short, simple directions;
- Understand short, simple texts a single phrase at a time, picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases and rereading as required;
- Ask and answer simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics;
- Write a string of short simple sentences.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.
