DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended for students who wish to learn Greek folk dances from different regions of the Greek world including Macedonia, Crete, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Peloponnesus, the Islands, Cyprus and Asia Minor. For each dance, a historical background will be provided, as well as some information on the sociological and anthropological meaning, the regional costumes, the instruments and the particular music associated with the dance. We will have the possibility to discover the history of famous Greek dances, such as, for example syrtaki (Zorba the Greek!), and their origins.

Learning Objectives:

- To learn about the importance of the dance (choros) in Greek history, mythology, tradition, and to understand the Greek dance culture;
- To introduce students to the concept of structure and function of Greek folk dances;
- To know the sociological and the anthropological meaning of each dance and on what special occasion it should be performed, such as wedding, war, peace time etc.;
- To perform representative dances of all regions of Greece (from the islands to the mainland) and Cyprus;
- To get in touch through dance performance with traditional Greek instruments, like bouzouki, with Greek music like rembetiko, and with Greek folk costumes.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. There will be also Power Point presentations, playback of selected music and songs, screening of scenes from movies such as Zorba the Greek or video clips from Greek festivals and cultural events.
