| DESCRIPTION | Taekwondo ("the way of the fist and foot") is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport known for its fast, acrobatic and effective kicks. It involves a structured and wide range of techniques designed to help you find your inner strength. The Olympic sport of taekwondo is played by two fighters wearing electronic armour. The fighters score points when their attacks land on the opponent's armour. Another aspect of the martial art features 'forms' (or 'Poomsae') which are sets of pre-arranged attack and defense movements that gradually become more complex as one advances. There are eight forms that lead to black belt. Taekwondo has its roots in several fighting styles, including Japanese Karate and Chinese martial arts, and has now evolved to become one of the most practiced and followed sports in the world. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Basic kicking, punching, and blocking techniques - Olympic sparring - Applying techniques in a self-defense setting - Basic Korean terms in the context of taekwondo - Poomsae (i.e. "forms") - Taekwondo etiquette: the martial arts discipline - Dobok (the uniform worn by practitioners of taekwondo) - Personal protective equipment (optional but encouraged) |
