DESCRIPTION Malta has a long history of art and antique collecting that goes back to the Knights’ Period. Starting as state and private collections, these became - during the 20th century – the source from which several state museums on the island have originated. Today, Malta boasts of several church, state and private art and antique collections housed in museums, churches, historical homes and private residences. This is complemented by a thriving auction and antiques market and a considerable amount of enlightened collectors and connoisseurs, who are in their own way contributing towards Maltese culture.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Outline the history of art and design with an emphasis on the Maltese art scene.
- Appreciate better the various typologies of fine art objects and antiques especially those pertaining to Malta.
- Describe the art and antiques collecting/auction scene in Malta with a special emphasis on the conservation, security and legal issues pertaining to handling and acquiring art and antiques and the financial dynamics of the businesses related to the sector.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Appreciate better art and antiques in Malta from a stylistic, cultural, historical and economic point of view.
- Analyse how the sector works and discover the motivations which compel collectors to collect or businesses to operate in the sector.
