Study-Unit Description

CODE MME4214

TITLE Engineering Ceramics

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

DESCRIPTION This unit presents the structures and properties and ceramic materials and presents some applications and methods of processing. The classification of ceramics and its significance are described in the context of ceramic material structure and bonding. Physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of ceramics are introduced and explained. The unit is rounded of by a consideration in depth of the materials science and engineering of powder processing of ceramics; hydroplastic forming and firing of clays; and production of glass.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of this unit are:
1. to present the properties and applications of ceramic materials in engineering;
2. to explain the behaviour of ceramic materials in terms of their properties and structure;
3. to introduce the possibilities and limitations of ceramic materials in engineering applications.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. describe the structures of simple ceramic material prototypes;
2. explain the properties of ceramic materials in terms of their structures and bonding;
3 explain the role of defects in ceramic material properties;
4. describe the powder processing of engineering ceramics;
5. describe the hydroplastic processing of clay materials;
6. explain the structure, properties and processing of glass.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. describe and recommend the correct application of ceramics in engineering design;
2. identify and explain the limitations of ceramic mechanical properties in practical applications;
3. explain the failure of ceramic materials in terms of their properties and design;
4. demonstrate the correct application of engineering ceramics in structural and thermal applications;
5. select the correct materials processing technique required to produce a component of the required material properties.
