| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit aims at introducing the basic concepts of the simple MOS circuits and their use in implementing more complex integrated circuit design building blocks. The students will then be able to identify the use of these building blocks in more complex circuitry. The students will also familiarise themselves with CAD simulation software used for integrated circuit design applications. Syllabus: • MOSFET device modelling: DC MOS model, small signal MOS model, weak inversion operation. • NMOS and CMOS implementation of analogue circuits • Active resistors: use of enhancement MOS, depletion MOS. • Current sources and current mirrors: MOS transistor as current source, cascode current source. Operation of basic MOS current mirror, cascode current mirror, Wilson current mirror. Transistor mismatches. Basic BJT mirror; Wilson and Widlar BJT current mirrors. • IC MOS amplifiers: Inverter amplifiers - operation, small-signal analysis, high frequency response. Cascode stages. Differential amplifiers: small-signal, high-frequency response; large-signal operation. • CMOS operational transconductance amplifiers: single stage OTA. Laboratory Work: • HSPICE circuit simulation including bias point, DC sweep, AC sweep, transient and Fourier analysis. • BJT modelling, MOSFET modelling, Op amp modelling and functional description modelling.
