UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Business and Enterprise Management

DESCRIPTION Rationale and Learning Objectives

The study-unit addresses the distinctive features of small enterprise and the associated Human Resource issues with special attention to the implications of viewing and treating small firms as microcosms of large organizations.

Indicative Syllabus and Study-Unit Outline

The programme is organized in two parts. The first part describes the extent to which managerial factors determine the survival, growth, success and/or failure of small firms. The internal factors and capabilities and the related Human Resource issues as prime contributors to success or failure are explored. The realities of the European Union context are introduced by explaining how the EU defines SMEs (distinguishing between autonomous, partner and linked enterprises) and the implications of the principles and lines for action declared in the European Charter for Small Enterprises. The second part of this study unit discusses managerial and employee creativity as an indispensable human resource which may help SMEs overcome the challenges they face due to their small size and vulnerability. It outlines ways in which creativity may be harnessed to develop innovative products, services and processes.
