Manufacturing companies benefiting from ERDF schemes administered by Malta Enterprise : an analysis

Abstract

Purpose: At present there is no study specifically targeting manufacturing companies who have benefited from European Union (EU) funds in Malta. As a matter of fact, this dissertation outlines the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) schemes that manufacturing firms may avail of, assesses the financial position of manufacturing firms and the support provided throughout the funding process. Design: In collecting primary data, both the quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. In fact a survey was conducted and circulated among manufacturers in Malta who benefited from ERDF schemes administered by Malta Enterprise (ME) during the 2007-2013 programming period. Furthermore several one to one interviews were conducted with consultants who assist applicants throughout the funding process as well as with the project leader being ME itself. Findings: From the survey conducted, it was clear that several manufacturing firms do consider EU funding. As a matter of fact, more funds should be allocated to ERDF schemes so that the Maltese manufacturing industry would be at the competitive edge with its worldwide competitors. Conclusions: Currently the EU funding process is quite bureaucratic and complex. As a result, the reimbursement process should be simplified to encourage firms to apply and invest in several projects, making the Maltese manufacturing industry upfront of its international competitors. Value: This dissertation would raise more awareness regarding the pros and cons in applying and benefiting for the ERDF funding schemes.
