Abstract: For centuries Malta has been reputed as being ‘the nurse of the Mediterranean. ’ Its geographical position, in the centre of the Mediterranean basin, ensured that it had a steady flow of patients whenever war was waged within the basin. The title was particularly well earned after the occupation of the Knights of St John in 1530s, when the hospitalier Knights built some of the finest hospitals on the Island, supported by excellent medical services, the envy of many a nation. Medical tourism today is one of the fastest growing industries globally, with many unlikely newcomers such as Hungary, Turkey and Argentina tapping in and making a name for themselves. Malta’s reputation in this field has long been tried and tested, however, how does it stand in the industry today? Are there any areas Malta can excel in? What are the biggest obstacles from precluding it in getting a bigger share of the market?
