Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the air battle for Malta during 1942, when it was at its peak and to try to establish the turning point, which turned British and Maltese fortunes from the brink of defeat to eventual victory. Throughout my quite extensive reading about the subject, I have been fascinated by one operation in particular: Operation Bowery, which occurred on the 9 May 1942. Meticulously planned and executed to near‐perfection, Bowery laid the groundwork for the strengthening of Malta’s fighter defences and the results of its success were felt with immediate effect. I believe it to be the turning point of the air battle for Malta and that it should be recognized as one of the symbolic events in Maltese history.
