Abstract: Regional integration has gained increasing importance as a building bloc for development. A number of Regional Economic Communities are functioning to fulfil their memberstates aspirations. In the Southern African region the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is one such organization. Like any inter-Governmental organization, the role of diplomacy in the fulfilment of its mandate is an important consideration for its success. This research aims to explore the development and makeup of SADC and to consider the role of its diplomacy as a central resource in promoting integration for the 15 member states of the organization. It dwells on the past developments within the organization and the influence of the different governments who are at the helm of its decision making process. Lessons are further drawn from the best practices, which have registered positive results so far. Arising from these lessons, solutions are then offered within the context of the existing realities.
