Abstract: This research sets out to analyse the role that a carefully selected set of conditions play in the effective implementation of Disarmament Demobilisation and Reintegration Programmes, ones which have been largely debated due to their ultimate goal of benefiting ex-combatants and consequent potential of adversely affecting a post-conflict setting if erroneously implemented. The objective of the study will be realised by means of an analysis of two separate programmes on the basis of the previously referenced conditions’ presence and effect on them. Conditions in this regard are analysed at the macro-level, meso-level and micro-level. Macro-level conditions pertain to the nation-wide post-conflict situation, meso-level conditions relate to the specific programme’s makings while micro-level conditions represent individual-level differentiations. The specific programmes of Liberia and Sierra Leone were chosen and analysed by means of a structured focused comparison on the basis of peacebuilding theory and indicators of its success. Both cases were chosen primarily due to them being the most contemporary examples of DDR programme which would still enable an in-depth analysis given the time that has passed since the finalisation of the programmes. Findings from this study aid in fortifying the understanding of, particularly the contemporary roles and objectives, of DDR programmes. The variance of applicability of conditions for success across cases was found to be minimal and in turn contributory towards a better understanding of the programmes particularly in a post-civil war, African context.
