Abstract: This article first discusses Aquinas’ vision of the Church and about faith as one of its absolutely necessary defining characteristics. Secondly, given St Thomas’ awareness of the fact that the personal grasp of the faith may diff er from one individual to another and, moreover, that the community of faith may grow in its comprehension and doctrinal formulation from one age to another, the theme of unity and diversity in the faith, according to St Thomas Aquinas, will be treated. Finally, Congar’s reflection about the potential ecumenical value of the way in which St. Thomas interpreted his sources or auctoritates (authorities) - what Congar calls one of Aquinas’ “hermeneutical principles” - shall be considered.
