Abstract: Particular emphasis is put on SMEs and project management practices especially in EU countries and specific reference is made later on to the local business arena. This dissertation seeks to establish whether project management practices used in larger organisations worldwide are also used by SMEs. The dissertation raises the question whether the aforementioned project management methodologies and processes can actually be adopted and adapted to be utilised by SMEs in a profitable manner. Sultana, N. (2016) aims also at determining the perceptions of local SME owners and employees about project management and its pros and cons, and its viability in improving company performance and operations. The author seeks first to establish a solid background of the existing project management literature, placing it in the context of the research as a point of reference by which to compare and contrast various project management methodologies from a historical perspective in order to gain awareness and thereby make inferences about future implications in the context of wide global technological change. The diversity of approaches to this study of management concepts has something to offer to management theory. Future prospects of the local SMEs are also taken into consideration.
