Abstract: This dissertation provides insight on the Malta Police Force use of lethal force. Fortunately, one seldom hears about fatal shootings on or by the police, despite the fact that firearms are commonly available amongst the Maltese society. Police officers do not have firearms as a personal issue but do carry them in certain situations and on specific duties, particularly the Rapid Intervention Unit. Whether or not Malta is one of the safest countries in the world, this research helps to keep the Police Force a front runner in the protection of human rights. It is imperative that no mistakes are done which deprive one person from the right to life. Malta should strive to keep the successful record it has in front of the European Court of Human Rights and avoid any negligence or arbitrary decisions for the use of lethal force. In the end, the outcome of this research provided new knowledge on the Malta Police Force and should contribute in the continuous improvement of its policies. It also helps the general public to understand the rationale thinking of the members of the Force, and most importantly, it should help fellow police officers to remain conscious on the subject.
