Abstract: With technology being embraced in all areas of life, it is important to realise its impact on children's learning development. This study examined the potential link between young children's use of ICT and their literacy development through the perceptions of 119 children, a head of school, six Year 2 teachers, and 83 parents. Questionnaires given to children sought information about types of computer activities they are engaged in and their preferences for reading and writing activities. Interviews with the head of school and the six teachers were conducted to obtain their perceptions about general learning benefits and specific literacy-related benefits offered through technology. Information about how computers are being used in classroom contexts was also collected. Questionnaires given to parents served to gain information about their perceptions of the impact of computers on children's lives, particularly their literacy development. Results indicated that children are highly enthusiastic about the use of computers, even for reading and writing purposes. Adults consider the computer as a vital tool for children's learning development, with most agreeing that it leaves a positive impact on children's literacy development as it motivates young learners and allows them to be engaged in meaningful reading and writing activities. However this small scale study concludes that computers are not yet being incorporated during lessons but are being used infrequently and out of context. A change in the way technology is being incorporated in children's learning is needed.
