Abstract: The death of Fidel Castro, on 25th November, 2016, had a mixed reception in the global media. The virtues of the Cuban revolution and the country’s rebirth that followed were highlighted in several accounts, whereas others gave importance to Castro’s detractors who would fling accounts of human rights abuses in the face of anyone seeking to highlight Cuban achievements. In this article, Peter Mayo outlines Castro's background, his remarkable achievements and the Cuban revolution, among other topics.
