Abstract: The main focus of this research is to demonstrate how the Maltese language can be integrated within various curricular subjects. In the first chapter, theme teaching is defined. Different terms for this methodology are given. Furthermore, an overview of this approach is given which dates back to the 1960s. The research dwells on current Year 3 classroom practice, in state, church and independent schools. The NMC is compared with the realities of the local classroom situations to determine how the curriculum is tackled. This has been done through questionnaires with current Year 3 teachers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with retired teachers to identify to what extent they were aware of the thematic approach. Furthermore, head teachers and education officers were interviewed to present their views and attitudes towards this methodology. Research findings were analysed as well as compared and contrasted with research in various countries. Both benefits and constraints of the thematic approach are outlined. Furthermore lesson plans are given as suggestions to teachers, as recommendations how the Maltese language can be enhanced through a thematic approach to various curricular subjects in the primary schools.
