Abstract: This study investigates local farmers’ pest management practices, their knowledge, awareness and views on the safe use of pesticides, and on related impacts on human health and the environment. Data was collected from Northern Maltese full-time farmers whose income mainly derives from agricultural activities. A snowball sampling technique was used to identify fifty farmers who participated in semi-structured and face-to-face interviews; field observations were also conducted during the interviewing sessions. Interview transcripts were then thematically analysed using NVivo software to identify key codes and themes. Findings revealed that the majority of farmers consider pesticides essential to safeguard against pest-induced damage to vegetable crops. Most farmers also have high awareness of the risks associated with the use of pesticides. Findings also demonstrated that most farmers use pesticides safely by wearing protective clothes and applying pesticides during periods of low human activity. Furthermore, the study showed that most farmers store and dispose of pesticide containers safely. However, there are still farmers that misuse pesticides and that are not aware of proper means of safe handling. The study also showed a degree of awareness of different safeguards for protecting the environment and other pest management strategies. However, the findings showed that the majority would not be willing to pay for crop protection management servicizing systems. The research suggests that information provided by the MCCAA needs to be strengthened and delivered in appropriate formats and via appropriate media. Additionally, the Government and NGOs should cooperate in order to raise more awareness about alternative of pest management strategies.
