Abstract: Malta joined the EU on 1 May 2004 and the eurozone on 1 January 2008. Its second EP elections to elect five MEPs took place on Saturday 6 June 2009. These were the first elections since joining the eurozone. With the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, a sixth MEP will be added. Just over a thousand electors (1044) could vote a week earlier due to particular commitments but Malta still does not allow its overseas citizens to vote, not even in its own embassies.
