| Abstract: | The history of rural mobility is normally studied in terms of outward migration to the city rather than inward migration to the rural areas. Even if inward mobility had some effect on the structures and spaces of the rural world, it is more often ignored in our historical annals since the net migration balance always tipped in favour of outward movements to the big cities while the numbers of those moving to the rural areas, in the nineteenth century, were negligible and thus escaped the scrutiny of quantitative analysis. |
