Issue Date: 2017
Abstract: The main aim of this qualitative study in the context of both commercial and general aviation, was to explore the importance attached to pilots’ nontechnical skills, the way they are currently assessed and potentially, the way they could be assessed in future. The research also delved into the role of the modern HR professional in assessing pilots’ non-technical skills and the potential acceptability of having non-pilots assessing pilots. Data was collected from four First Officers and Four Captains and the emerged themes were analysed using Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006). The research highlighted pilots’ perceptions towards the importance of nontechnical skills and how these should be assessed. Opinions varied greatly and appeared connected to one’s position, age, and whether they worked in commercial or general aviation. Captains, especially those of a more mature age, tended to be more rigid and traditional in their approach and ideas. This suggested that introducing new ideas would constitute a challenge in view of the established culture. This research also proposes tangible recommendations to the industry in relation to the subject studied. In addition, it also makes suggestions for future, related research in this interesting industry.
