Abstract: This study has been commissioned by the General Workers Union as one of a series on the Impact of European Union (E.U.) Membership on Maltese Society. The remit of this particular paper was to examine the impacts of the E.U.’s Environmental legislation on Maltese society, with particular reference to workers and their families. The paper does this by first outlining of the rationale, the method and the extent to which the E.U. regulates the environment. A summary of environmental legislation is provided including regulations and directives in the areas of Air Quality, Water Quality, Industrial Pollution Control and Risk, Chemicals and Genetically Modified Organisms, Nature Protection, Waste Management, Noise, Nuclear safety, Horizontal (cross cutting) issues and Civil Protection.
