Abstract: This publication deals with the rather complex but interesting mosaic of relations between environment and sustainable development in the Maltese Islands. It is addressed to all actors in all areas and at all levels: all of us are part of the problem, and we should therefore all be part of the solution. The publication is also a further step towards the implementation of the various activities geared at promoting wide public awareness on environment and development issues at the national and local levels. More specifically, it represents one of the key activities in t his regard, approved by the 20 Mediterranean countries t hat, together with the EU, constitute the Contracting Parties t o t he Barcelona Convention. This Convention was launched over twenty five years ago, under the auspices of UNEP, through the Mediterranean Action Plan, as a concrete and efficient means of protecting the Medit erranean from all sorts of pollution and degradation and to promote sustainable development in the region. The brochure is, in addition, one of the activities backed by the Medite rranean Commission for Sustainable Development to promote information and public awareness on the environment and sustainable development. It is a joint initiative, promoted and supported by UNEP/MAP and realised by the Ministry for the Environment of Malta, aimed at backing the efforts undertaken by the Ministry towards the integration of the environment and the sustainable development issues.
