| Abstract: | This dissertation highlights the present food hygiene practices amongst a sample of Maltese and Gozitan households. The Disease Surveillance Unit, Malta, claimed that the majority of food borne illness outbreaks in 2006, (amounting to 36%) originated from households. The researchers investigated different food hygiene subtopics to analyze the cause of such a report. The participants were observed in their natural setting and were given a thorough explanation of what is being observed. The participants were recruited in the study via word of mouth and telephone calls. Results obtained were evaluated for educational backgrounds of food preparers and for any regional differences (if any). As part of the dissertation, two types of resources were developed: a. A bilingual (English and Maltese) informational booklet on food hygiene to be distributed to the research participants. b. Interactive software with activities on food hygiene to empower users to practice safe food handling. The study proved that more awareness is required to Maltese and Gozitan householders regarding food hygiene practices. The information gathered during the study was valuable to create the resources which were based on the results obtained from the interviews. The two resources were sent to every participant as an appreciative token for participating and to increase further knowledge and awareness on the topic. |
