Abstract: This article is the translation and revision of the paper 'Maltesisch: Sprachgeschichtliche und areallinguistische Aspekte' read in the 5th symposium on languages in contact in Europe, at Mannheim 1982. The subject of this article is Maltese as a language of different strata which have deposited themselves out of several groups of languages, respectively dialects.
