Sugli Scriptores Melitenses, apendice inserita nel rifacimento inedito della Bibliotheca Sicula di A. Mongitore

Abstract

In the year 1708, when the first of the two volumes of the Bibliotheca Sicula by Antonino Mongitore appeared in Palermo, the Istoria della volgar poesia by Giovan Maria Crescimbeni had already been published for a decade, and was released in Rome in 1698. The Mongitore had consulted and also cited several times, but had not caught in it, perhaps he had not wanted to grasp, that "first vague glimmer of historiographical conscience" thanks to which a modern conception of literary history began to take shape in Italy. Palermo had preferred to remain anchored to the seventeenth-century lists of tradition, without taking care of the historical development except in a short paragraph at the beginning of the book.
