= The possession of the Maltese archipelago was for a long time an asset in the maritime or commercial warfare operations for those who wanted to establish their domination in the Mediterranean. How do Tripoli of Barbary and Malta, under the British rule since the early 19th century have a linked history? The answer lies at the types of relationships that were induced because of geographical proximity and to find out how Tripoli found itself, in the words of Charles Féraud (1927: 332) under "the cannon of Malta" all throughout the nineteenth century.
