The major barriers to the development of Maltese cooperatives : an analysis

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to identify the most significant barriers which the cooperative movement faces. Through the identification of the major barriers, potential solutions may be discussed and thus recommendations can be selected. Design: Primary data for this research was collected through the use of semistructured interviews with nine cooperative experts who provided a representative sample of the different institutions which comprise the Maltese cooperative movement. Findings: The findings of the study indicated that the most significant problems are the lack of education and awareness regarding the cooperative movement. These are closely followed by the divide within the movement itself; which is also hindering further development of Maltese cooperatives. Conclusion: This research concludes that in order to help the movement grow and develop, first and foremost one must tackle the lack of education and awareness of this business model. Furthermore, in order for the movement to reach its full potential there must be cooperation amongst cooperatives, and thus the correct environment for growth can be fostered. Value: The researcher hopes that this study will be used as a basis for further research on the Maltese cooperative movement. It is also hoped that through the identification of significant barriers, targeted action is taken in order to reduce, if not eliminate, these barriers. This should help the Maltese cooperative movement flourish.
