Abstract: This chapter provides a description of the fundamental characteristics of the Maltese economy and synthesises some recent studies undertaken concerning Malta's competitiveness. It discusses the desirability of Malta's adopting the EU's Lisbon Agenda to promote economic competitiveness. The chapter gives an overview of Malta's current standing in terms of the Lisbon Agenda criteria, in comparison with the 15 States that were EU members before May 2004 (EU15) and the ten new Member states. On these bases, the chapter identifies a number of priority areas for action, aimed at improving the competitiveness of the Maltese economy
