Abstract: Competitiveness is regarded as a primary requisite for Cyprus. The objective of this chapter is to examine and assess the competitiveness of this Island State. Reference is made to the structure and performance of the Cypriot economy between 1998 to 2002, looking at selected economic indicators. The institutional set-up with regard to competitiveness is also examined. In addition, the chapter examines the strategic competitiveness agenda for an action plan, developed by Cyprus, in terms of its Economic Strategy and its Economic Strategic Objectives which focus on enhancing the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy, through government planned interventions, structured under four priority pillars, namely improvement of the business environment, enhancement and modernisation of business activity, strengthening the outward orientation of the secondary and tertiary sectors and enhancement of research, technology and innovation.
