Citation: Calleja, R. (2018). Rhetoric, propaganda and the quest for truth in George Orwell’s work (Bachelor's dissertation).
Abstract: This dissertation explores the manifestation of rhetorical language and truth in George Orwell’s work. By demonstrating such concepts in his novels and essays, the writer aims to cast a light on the persuasive and influential techniques carried out by propagandists. He grounds much of his essays and novels on his personal life experiences, thus shedding light on the political turmoil of his time. Through the depiction of his fictional characters, such as Winston and Flory, as well as his autobiographical work, Orwell seeks to induce a deeper understanding on the persuasive effects of rhetorical language, which may lead to the disruption of truth. The writer encourages his readers to maintain their individuality, as well as what they consider to be true, in order to avoid political or self-deception. The culmination of this dissertation aims to present one with Orwell’s exploration of the various uses of language, as well as the writer’s search for truth. The first chapter introduces the writer in context, and provides insight on troubling notions that are prevalent throughout his work. The following chapters deal with rhetoric in terms of propaganda and truth, while the fourth chapter discusses Orwell as a political writer, who seeks to influence his readers through his work.
