Abstract: The aim of this research study was to determine which factors affect students the most when it comes to choosing Biology at Form 2, and whether they wish to continue studying Biology at an advanced or intermediate level. In addition to this, the performance of students was also taken into consideration. A simple questionnaire, consisting of four questions was sent to eight “experts” (Educational Officers, Head of Departments and teachers). From their responses, two student questionnaires were formulated (one for Form 2 and one for Form 4 students) and given to a representative number of students. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed between six schools (two state, two church and two independent schools). For each 100 questionnaires distributed to each school type, 50 were given to Form 2 and 50 to Form 4 students. The questionnaires were distributed evenly between males and females. From the results obtained, the top reasons for opting to choose or not to choose Biology at Form 3 and Sixth Form were recorded. The main reason for choosing Biology at Form 3 is based upon the positive experiences in Integrated Science, and the top reason for choosing it at Sixth Form derives from aspirations for a career where Biology is required. The main reason for not choosing Biology at Form 3 and Sixth Form were career aspirations where Biology is not required.
