| Abstract: | This qualitative research study looks further into the networks formed by migrants, more specifically refugees and UK economic migrants, and discusses the use of social media in relation to their networks. Social networks are of prime importance as they lead to social capital. To understand further the experience of migrants, throughout this study, in-depth interviews were carried out with the two groups of migrants. Questions were asked concerning their life before migrating to Malta, their life in Malta and questions on any future migratory plans they might have. It is interesting to note that both similarities and differences arose between the two groups of migrants. The UK economic migrants were better equipped before they migrated, with all of the UK economic migrants having visited Malta before and some even having strong ties in Malta. The refugees, on the other hand, had little to no information before coming to Malta and neither did they have social ties set up. Most of the migrants kept up their strong ties with individuals back in their country of origin. They explained how this was only possible, and made much easier and cheaper, through social media. Social media also aided the migrants to live a transnational life, keeping them connected with their home community, while also aiding their life in Malta. Although this qualitative in-depth study of these migrants’ networks is not representative of the whole migrant population in Malta, nevertheless it offers a detailed look into the lived experience of these migrants and their social networks in Malta. |
