Abstract: Statistics show that among European adolescents, Maltese youngsters have the highest percentage excess body weight (Carroquino, 2009). A way to stay healthy and prevent obesity is through Physical Activity (AHA, 2007). Eleven and twelve year old girls [N=101] were researched to find the prevalence of obesity and their physical activity levels. Body Mass Index (an indicator for obesity) was recorded and girls were categorized using Cole's et al. (2000) cut-off points. Self-report questionnaires were used to analyze lifestyle, exercise and leisure habits. Physical Activity levels and duration were found through accelerometry. Participants wore an accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X) for 5 consecutive days including a weekend. Data was analyzed mainly through the variables of Body Mass Index (BMI), Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) and School Type, using correlation coefficient tests such as Chi Square and One way ANOVA. A high significance was found between MVPA and BMI Classification where overweight females are the most active, while obese girls are the least. Eleven and twelve year old females in Malta do not reach the recommended 60 minutes of MVPA daily (WHO, 2010). This issue is of governmental concern, while the immediate responsibility lies within the hands of the child, parents and educators.
