Abstract: | Extreme tourism is a growing segment of the service economy that combines travel, exclusivity, adrenaline pumping, and personal trial. Adventure and excitement are an integral part of the tourism economy today: Large numbers of tourists are interested in combining trips abroad with opportunities for testing their physical and psychological skills and endurance in harsh and unusual environments. This is one bold component of the contemporary experience economy, supported by a diverse range of services—from airlines to travel agents and from adventure guides to off-road vehicle rentals. It includes rock and mountain climbing, highaltitude cycling, whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, ice walking, and paragliding. This entry further defines extreme tourism and examines the factors contributing to its success. |
