Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate different recycling behaviours of University of Malta students, in order to find significant behaviour predictors for Recycling participation. The research study will utilize the theoretical framework of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and The Model of Altruistic behaviour to help investigate determinants of recycling intentions and participation. Design/Methodology/Approach – An online survey is utilized to acquire primary data from the target sample. This data is then computed and analysed, with the results being reviewed against existing literature to better answer the research question. Findings – The findings of this research study resulted that, when applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour, ‘Personal Recycling Attitudes and Norms’, ‘Social Recycling Attitudes and Norms ‘ and ‘Inconveniences’ (or situational factors) emerged as significant predictors of ‘Recycling Participation’. When this model was extended to include another two determinants, namely ‘Motivational factors’ and ‘Recycling Opportunities’, the latter emerged as fifth significant predictor of Recycling Participation. Research Limitations/Implications – The research study is limited by the number of students who participated in the survey used to acquire the primary data. Future studies would require a larger sample in order to have a more representative and accurate account of the whole population. Practical Implications - This study aims to provide an insight into the mind-set and behaviours displayed by University students with regards to Recycling Participation. In doing so, the study can be used for future research and be used as a basis for policy makers to develop and implement more direct, efficient and effective recycling schemes. Originality/value - Predicting behaviour can lead policy makers to refine and develop new recycling schemes, which can help increase recycling rates in Malta, adhering to the goals set out for Malta by the European Commission.
