Abstract: | The Isle of Man is not, nor ever has been, a part of the United Kingdom. It is a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom and has the Queen as its sovereign head. It is home to a resident population of 71,714 (as of 1996), of whom Island-born residents are very marginally in the minority. Only 3 per cent of its population was born beyond Britain or Ireland. The island's gross domestic product in 1995-96 was some £651 million, a national income produced with the assistance of a workforce of around 34,000. Per capita income of £9,075 is at 86 per cent of the corresponding United Kingdom figure. |
