Abstract: The general aim of this research study was to explore different teaching pedagogies being used in the Home Economics (HE) classrooms and to investigate whether they are effectively suited for 21st century learners. Furthermore, the researcher was interested in discovering how the use of different resources and varied instruction enhances the learning experience. A qualitative approach was adopted; eight non-participant observational sessions were conducted with four newly-graduated HE teachers in State and Church Secondary schools. The aim for such a tool was to explore the different pedagogies being employed. Additionally, two focus group sessions with Form 3 students were conducted to gain an insight into the opinions of the learners. Three main findings emerged: firstly, the participating teachers implemented a blended approach in the teaching of HE with their Form 3 classes, including the use of student-centred and constructivist approaches. This highlighted the fact that teachers recognise the need for pedagogies to be catered for students’ needs. Secondly, the participating students were conscious that they learn in distinctive ways. Finally, notwithstanding the aforementioned results, despite having the necessary technological tools in the classroom, the participating teachers were still not providing innovative technological methodologies. Moreover, differentiated instruction has yet to be implemented in the teaching of the subject. Such results emphasised the need for investment in equipping teachers with the support, skills and knowledge to further enhance their teaching strategies. Finally, the researcher discussed general recommendations for the 21st century education and proposed areas for further research.
