Citation: Gouder, A. (2017). The design and development of a teaching / learning resource pack to teach plotting and interpreting of graphs (Bachelor's dissertation).
Abstract: This dissertation had two main aims. The first aim was to discover the difficulties which Form 4 Track 2 students encounter in plotting and interpreting graphs. This was achieved by administrating a test in two state schools, a boys’ school and a girls’ school. The test features thirteen different questions covering plotting and interpreting graph, focusing on linear graphs only, in the Mathematics Syllabus. In general, students encountered difficulties in determining the gradient from two given points, interpreting a real life problem into a graph and sketching a graph given the equation. The second aim of this dissertation was to design and develop a teaching and learning resource pack for form 4 track 2 students. This resource pack included problems and activities to help the students better understand plotting and interpreting graphs. The resource pack included interdisciplinary learning, inquiry-based learning based on a constructivist approach. The resource pack was given to teachers and mathematics head of departments and interviews were conducted to give their feedback. Generally their feedback was encouraging and positive; in fact, they all agreed that this resource pack would be a great help for the students to learn how to plot and interpret graphs. Some also gave suggestions to potentially improve this resource pack, such as sequencing of the activities and because certain activities may be found difficult by students, so they should include more teacher guidance.
