Abstract: This paper addresses. the need for an appropriate competition law and regime in Papua New Guinea and comments on the existing legal landscape arc aimed at fostering competition. The paper also highlights the steps that are now being taken to devise a competition law regime, based on the two waves of attempts. The paper concludes with some personal assessments of the prevailing situation and gazes into the unknown, particularly in the implementation of the new regime. On current indications, the new Independent Consumer and Competition Commission should be up and running by the end of this year 2002.
