Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the challenging role that lay Heads of School play in fostering and implementing a Catholic vision of life, within a Church school setting. The evangelising mission of the Church in the world, “Go and teach all nations” (Matt 28) is simple and clear. Yet issues like globalisation, consumerism, secularisation and technology have left no institution or society, including the Catholic school, untouched. The Catholic identity and culture of the Catholic school are undermined as the number of religious members of congregations continues to dwindle due to a lack of vocations. New goals are being placed on the increasing number of lay Heads of Church schools to safeguard the Catholic ethos and thus ensure the success of its evangelising mission. This research aims to reveal the extent of the role that lay Heads participate in fostering a Catholic character and culture; their effect on the quality and the future of Catholic schools in Malta; and the importance of assigning Headship roles to professionally competent and spiritually-prepared individuals. One of the main findings in the study is that Heads of Church schools lack a theological literacy and faith formation opportunities, and that there is a great divide between the components of leadership and management courses and reality. This research study provides valuable insights and makes recommendations to three important bodies: to Church leadership and management course providers; to the Church Secretariat for Catholic Education and to prospective lay Heads of school.
