Abstract: Golf course development has been the subject of controversy in the Maltese islands due to Malta’s environmental specialists’ interest in the subject and two major reasons. One being limited land resources and two being limited water resources. Malta is heading into mass tourism and a niche market is needed, the motive for golf results in the expansion of golf courses in the Mediterranean region. Golf courses have been developed as a part of tourist packages in Malta's neighbouring Mediterranean countries such as Sicily, Tunisia, Cyprus, Spain, Portugal and Greece. This creates a competitive advantage to those countries. As Marion C. Markwick stated, ‘’In fear of establishing superiority competition from these countries, Malta faces two choices, either to pursue more golf courses or to stay put,’’(Marion Markwick). Although Malta already has an existing golf course in Marsa with over five hundred members and many on the waiting list because it has reached its carrying capacity, the course belongs to a private club and consequently has limited visitor capacity. Therefore, Malta is now on the negative side in comparison to competing Mediterranean destinations or countries. The aim of this research is to find out if Malta as an island is a potential destination for golf tourists, and the study focuses on the relationship between golf and the Maltese. During the interview or interacting with people, valuable concepts can be discovered. This research follows the qualitative research by conducting interviews with people from various sectors and those who were involved in golf course projects. The study concludes that Malta is an ideal destination for golf tourists.
