Abstract: The most common means of retail business growth is geographic expansion. This dissertation is intended to study the geographic expansion decision of four selected businesses and the financial controller's role in this decision, using a case study approach. The pre-decision and post-decision mechanisms were studied in depth, through a number of semi-structured interviews with the financial controllers and owners of the companies. It emerged that the key persons involved in this decision are the owners of the business. However, cross-functional teams give their input whenever there is a proposed expansion. A number of issues are taken into consideration before a final decision is taken, and financial feasibility features as one important issue. The location of the retail outlet has a high level of influence on the feasibility of the expansion. The timescale of the plans carried out differed and thus the techniques used for investment appraisal varied too. However, a simple technique such as the payback period is used in all the companies. Local businesses have a set of distinguishing characteristics that enable them to experience only in part the drawbacks of geographic expansion. On the other hand, Malta's limited geographical area might limit the potential benefits normally associated with geographic expansion.
