Abstract: The Rome II Regulation is the next step in the development of European Private International Law. It concerns the harmonization of conflict of law rules for noncontractual obligations, actually preceding the promulgation of the Rome I Regulation, which translated the Rome Convention 1980 into a Community instrument, hence providing for conflict of law rules for contractual obligations. Authors suggest that the Rome Regime, along with the Brussels Regime, completes the codification and harmonization of Private International Law rules in the European Union. This dissertation shall analyzing in what manner Rome II is effectively the next (or final) step in a European Private International Law scenario. Chapter I will be looking at the background behind Rome II and its tortuous (sic) history. Chapters II and III will provide a run-through of the Regulation, highlighting the different conflict rules for the various non-contractual obligations. Once this is completed, Chapter IV will provide concluding remarks as to the result obtained by Rome II, which should therefore indicate why Rome II is indeed the next step in the development of European Private International Law.
