Abstract: The intention behind this dissertation is to provide an analysis of the Maltese economy during the years 1933-1939, by focussing on trade and industry. These were years when Malta was under direct imperial rule after the British had suspended Maltese self-government constitution of 1921. The interest in trade and industry arises from personal work experience in the shipping and commercial sectors. But besides this it was felt that more research is needed on the economy of Malta during the inter-war years. Thus, I have concentrated on these two sectors to analyse some aspects of Maltese underdevelopment and also British policy towards the local economy.
