| Abstract: | This research is original in its nature as it investigates the use of social media tools alongside tuition in the Maltese higher secondary schools governed by the Government of Malta. The research analyses different types of social media tools. The impacts together with the barriers which may be faced when implementing such a system are identified and as part of the conclusions. The objectives were achieved through the collection of data from all the stakeholders involved, mainly students, teachers, school administration and parents. Closed and open ended questionnaires were used to collect primary data. The study indicates that the majority of all the stakeholders harbour an interest in combining social media tools with tuition. Through their responses it is evident that they have a mutual understanding of the notion that the benefits of such a system outweigh the disadvantages. The latter, however, are still worth noting in the list of negative impacts and barriers. The study concludes that the most challenging barrier is the limitation in resources especially devices, internet connectivity and human resources. However, the most suitable tool to be implemented is the 'Social Network', where all students and teachers can connect through their personal account to communicate and share educational material. This can be used both during and after school hours. It was also concluded that the use of 'Podcasts' could be beneficial for the stakeholders. The main benefits gained are an increase in school motivation and performance. As regards parents, they find no objection to their children using social media provided it is for educational purposes. |
