Abstract: Infertility causes various implications. This study shall look at the psychological and emotional effects of infertility on individuals and couples. An outline of the typical gender- specific reactions is given, together with the effects of childlessness and how it affects their identity, loss and relationships. Apart from emotional issues, a comparison between the social and cultural problems is defined. An outlook on the coping mechanisms and various modalities of therapy is discussed. Problems and limitations in therapy are also discussed. This paper concludes by heightening the importance of psychological counselling when coming in contact with infertile clients. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the psychological effects of infertility by proxy. Five psychologists from the MPA (Maltese Psychological Association) and Social Welfare department were recruited to take part in a semi structured interview. Findings will be analysed using the thematic method to identify the psychological impact infertility has on the individual/couple. The aim of this study is to stress the importance of psychotherapy in relation to infertility and how it helps infertile persons to manage and resolve their issues and improve communications, self-esteem and maturity.
